Information

Home learning environments are closely associated with children’s competency development. In particular, the Home Literacy Environment (HLE) that focusses on reading habits in families supports language competencies of children. In this longitudinal study with three measurement points, we analyze the association of different facets of the HLE with children’s literacy, linguistic and socioemotional competencies based on a sample of 131 children with an average age of 37 months at the beginning of the study. Children’s linguistic and literacy abilities and intelligence were assessed with standardized tests, whereas parents were surveyed in regard to onset, frequency, quality of shared reading, their overall Home Literacy Environment (HLE), and families’ socioeconomic status. Educators reported on children’s socioemotional skills.

The aim of this PhD project is to assess if and how different facets of the HLE are associated with children’s early socioemotional competencies and if further variables, such as children’s linguistic abilities or intelligence are mediating this association.
